Maximalist trap built around the Roland TR-808: long, distorted sub-bass hits tuned and slid like melody, machine-gun hi-hat rolls, crashing rimshot snares and ominous brass and string stabs. Beats run loud, symphonic and apocalyptic, mixed to overwhelm, with the 808 itself playing lead.
History
Lex Luger's bombastic 2010-2011 productions for Waka Flocka Flame and Rick Ross industrialized trap into an arena-scaled, 808-saturated sound, soon drawing beat requests from Kanye and Jay-Z. Mike WiLL Made-It, Southside and the 808 Mafia collective extended the template across the early 2010s, making the booming, melodic 808 the genre's defining sonic signature.
