The original deep-cut era: regional teenage bands cutting fuzz-and-Farfisa singles full of menace and naive aggression, the world later excavated by the Nuggets and Pebbles comps. Snarling vocals, primitive distortion, screaming organ, occasional acid edges. Mostly one-hit and no-hit wonders frozen on 45s.
History
Thousands of US bands formed after the Beatles' 1964 Sullivan appearance, recording locally on shoestring budgets. Most vanished after a single. Lenny Kaye's 1972 Nuggets double LP rescued the canon, followed by Pebbles and Back from the Grave, turning forgotten teen punk into a revered, heavily collected genre.
