2000s Pop Era
tagStarted 2004Peak 2006-2009Last big hit 2010
Mid-to-late-2000s mainstream pop defined by crunchy hip-hop drums, ringtone hooks, Auto-Tune flourishes and the first wave of producer-as-star electro-club crossover. Glossy radio singles blending dance, R&B and rap, with maximal choruses tuned for clubs, MySpace and the iPod shuffle.
History
After the teen-pop wave receded, 2000s pop absorbed crunk, club-rap and the producer-driven sound of Timbaland and The Neptunes, then pivoted late-decade toward electro-house euphoria as Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas pushed dance-pop to the fore, setting up the EDM-pop explosion of the 2010s.
