The early-aughts 'the-' band wave: lean, raw, retro guitar rock with snotty swagger, primitive riffs, stripped drum kits and a deliberately cheap, live-in-a-room sound. Equal parts 60s garage and 70s punk, it scrubbed away nu-metal's bombast for skinny ties, vintage amps and three-chord immediacy — fashion and fuzz in equal measure.

History

Sparked by The Strokes' 'Is This It' and The White Stripes' 'White Blood Cells' in 2001, the revival swept up The Hives, The Vines and Jet, hyped heavily by NME as 'rock's saviour.' iTunes ad placement (Jet) widened its reach before the scene fragmented mid-decade into indie and dance-punk directions.
