The 'The'-band mainstream explosion: tight, lean, retro-styled rock with trebly overdriven guitars, hooky riffs, four-on-the-floor swagger and skinny ties. Production is dry and punchy, vocals cool and clipped or yelped. It put fuzz back on radio and MTV as a deliberate rejection of nu-metal gloss.
History
Detonated in 2001 when The Strokes' Is This It and The White Stripes' White Blood Cells landed together, with Sweden's Hives and Australia's Vines close behind. Media dubbed them 'saviours of rock' and Rolling Stone declared 'Rock Is Back!' A New York/Detroit-led wave that defined the decade's guitar mainstream.
